New Zealand awards Kawarau Falls Bridge
Date: 07 September 2015
NZ Transport Agency has awarded McConnell Dowell Constructors the design and build contract for a two-lane bridge at Kawarau Falls.
McConnell Dowell has teamed up with Novare Design for the design.
The award follows McConnell Dowell’s recent completion of two new bridges over the Waitaki River near Kurow for the Transport Agency and some of the same people will work on the new project.
Funding for the bridge was brought forward in the government’s announcement in June 2014 to accelerate a package of regionally important State highway projects. The Kawarau Falls Bridge project in fast-growing Queenstown was one of five from around the country included in the package.
McConnell Dowell will complete the detailed design so that construction work on the bridge structure can start at the end of this year. The value of the contract is NZ$21.9m (£9m), with contract completion in the third quarter of 2017.
